vatican. pope francis celebrating his first palm sunday. this was just moments ago. he's at st. peter's, marking the the start of holy week. he walked along st. peter's carrying a palm. he greeted the faithful. continuing his image as the people's pope. we'll see more of that coming up. >> first palm sunday as pope. all right. and also this morning, a sure sign of spring around here in new york city. even though it doesn't quite feel like it, the world-famous coney island reopens this morning. it's the big comeback for the amusement park and beach that was hard-hit by superstorm sandy. we'll take you there life for that moment. but we'll begin with the winter that just won't end. no matter what the calendar is saying. a spring snowstorm is moving its way across the east, causing havoc along the way. abc's gio benitez is in the thick of it in hard-hit kansas city. but let's start with meteorologist ginger zee. good morning to all of you. i want to start with a look at why you can't drive in this type of snowstorm. look at this, this is from topeka area, a highway sign completely caked in snow. we're talking 3 inches at this

point north of kansas city up to close to 20 inches that fell in colorado. it's a whole lot of snow. and right now, winter storm warnings stretch from kansas all the way to pennsylvania. we want to check in with gio benitez who's in kansas city this morning, a place i have been too often this winter. gio. >> reporter: you know what, ginger, if you have been here twice before, we know that kansas city has had a rough winter. now, with this third major snowstorm, lot of people are saying, it's a rough spring. ten states hit by a wicked snowstorm overnight. the huge storm ravaging the midwest, bringing cars to a screeching halt. worst hit, colorado, the state was pounded with snow, getting on average up to eight to ten inches more than other states. just outside denver, a massive, 50-car pileup on the highway in near whiteout conditions. and look at this.

a tanker truck catching fire. in the midst of freezing temps. highway workers warning everyone to stay off the roads. >> anybody is trying to go to the east, everybody is -- deciding to get to kansas city, unfortunately they can't get that way. >> reporter: in kansas, this suv slid off the side of the road. and needed emergency officials to save it. now, the gulf coast is bracing for the wrath of the storm. some parts of the south are already seeing severe weather. heavy hailstorms in texas. high winds in florida where tree branches are torn apart like twigs. and in georgia, where heavy rain led to bad driving conditions. and, if you're thinking about those march madness games here in kansas city, we're told the games will go on. and ginger, i know you'll love this, but i'm just thinking about that nice, warm studio right now. >> yeah, sorry i couldn't loan you the orange extreme team weather jacket. it's very warm. next time.

let's talk timing. we have that low-pressure system is creating all of the havoc there. it will move through st. louis, central illinois and indiana here through today. tonight, we talk about the east coast, the mid-atlantic getting a little bit of snow. and a mix for parts of new jersey and new york. some of the bigger cities along the coast will have 1 to 3 inches of snow. as you can see in the forecast snow totals here. i do think a lot of it not is going to stick. it's going to be that wet, springtime snow that we see so often. the severe weather is targeting parts of the southeast. parts of alabama, southern georgia, south carolina and northern florida. that's what i want you to look out for today. damaging wind and hail in that area. very heavy flooding rains possible as well. i'll be back in just a couple of minutes for the nation's weather. for now back to dan and bianna. >> thank you, ginger. well, now, to america's newest multi-multi-multimillionaire. one ticket was sold last night for the $388 million jackpot. the winning numbers were, 17, 29, 31, 52, 53, and the

powerball was 31. >> that winning ticket was sold. we know this, now, somewhere in new jersey. and abc's rob nelson is in border town this morning. there he is, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. that's right. we're in a truck stop. here in new jersey. they tell me that they usually sell between $200 to $400 worth of powerball tickets. on a typical day. yesterday, they sold about $1,000 worth of powerball. part of the frenzy around the country. we don't know if this is the store where the winning ticket was sold. but, we do know that somewhere in the garden state is waking up this morning able to afford a lot more gardens. >> tonight it is 31. >> reporter: that was somebody's lucky number in new jersey. where one powerball player is waking up $338 million richer. >> and powerball. >> reporter: lottery frenzy has

back with your boyfriend and back in school. all of that could be jeopardized by what could happen in court tomorrow in italy. abc's nick schifrin is in london. >> reporter: good morning, dan. this could be the final chapter in knox's long, legal saga. it will be written by three italian justices, as knox anxiously awaits the verdict. this morning, an exclusive picture of amanda knox enjoying her freedom in seattle. she's back in class, spending time with her sisters and her boyfriend. but all of that could change starting tomorrow. that's when the italian supreme court will hold the final hearing in her almost six-year case. justices will decide whether a lower court was right to overturn her conviction of her murder of her roommate just 18 months ago. >> i can't understand why they were so sure i was the one who knew everything. >> both defendants have been acquitted by the charges.

>> she's already endured three or four years in an italian prison. this murder charge continues to hang over her head. >> reporter: after the release of knox and her former italian boyfriend, prosecutors apeeled the lower court's decision. there's still unanswered questions. we're serging for the true. the knox family said they're not worried about monday's hearing. simply another example of harassment by the prosecution. >> peace of mind will occur if she wins on monday. then, the case is truly over. if she loses, the saga continues. >> reporter: if she wins, she'll never be tried again. but if she loses, their case goes right back to court. which is why, this morning, knox's lawyers says that she's anxiously awaiting the verdict. knox has spent the last year writing her memoir. "waiting to be heard." now, after taking writing classes, she hopes to make a living writing. but it will all depend on what those italian justices decide. dan?

>> big week for her. amanda knox will be speaking for the first time in an abc news primetime special with diane sawer on tuesday, april 30th at 10:00 p.m. thanks to nick schriffen for reporting this morning. and this morning, a line has formed outside of the supreme court. people want to witness history, where the justices will take up gay marriage. let's bring in george stephanopoulos. host of abc's "this week." george, do the court watchers think there's a real chance the justices could legalize gay marriage? >> that's certainly one of the big options. i don't think that the experts believe that's the most likely option. the court is considering two cases right now. one having to do with proposition 8, banning gay marriage in california. and the other is defensive marriage act, which defines marriage at a federal level. what i think you're going to see is a focus on two justices, anthony kennedy, the traditional swing vote on the supreme court, and chief justice john roberts.

they see the wave developing in support of gay marriage. we have seen that developing. now, a majority support in the country is moving very, very quickly. they don't want to risk that. what they're likely to do is create the space for states to make their own decisions. look at this clue from anthony kennedy from a speech this month. "a democracy should not be dependent for its major decisions from nine unelected people from a narrow legal background have to say." try to create the space for citizens to make these decisions. >> turning to another controversial issue and that's gun control, overnight, mayor bloomberg is going to be spending $12 million in new tv ads to convince senators for tougher gun law. will that work? >> we'll see. this week we learned that that the assault weapons ban that president obama pushed, all but dead in the senate. even though the president is going to continue to push for a vote. this will come to the floor of the senate when they return from their two-week easter break in early april. the president will continue to push. but the real issue now, is

the electrical systems of iconic rides, destroyed. >> we had the water up to here and the problem is, it wasn't regular water. it was corrosive. >> reporter: it's a storm damaged story echoed. along the jersey store. >> and there is seaside. >> reporter: where rides were buried beneath six feet of water. the boardwalk ripped to pieces. yet from atlantic city back up to coney island, these legendary beachside amusement parks are beating the odds, reopening for the season on schedule today. >> i think the message is, we're resilient. we're resilient new yorkers. sandy isn't going to keep us down. >> reporter: it took almost five months of hard work and millions of dollars, but, soon, the wooden planks of the famous cyclone will rumble and the smell of nathan's famous hot dogs will fill the air. signs of the start of summer on coney island, but a celebration of so much more.

again, a dangerous sinkhole opening up in a residential neighborhood in florida. this is going on near where a sinkhole swallowed a man in his bed. >> i was scared that maybe it would be our house next. >> reporter: caution tape up and neighbors on edge. after the spotting of another sinkhole in seffner, florida. it's the second sinkhole in less than a month. and a mile and a half away from where 37-year-old jeff bush was swallowed alive, when the earth opened up under his bedroom, killing him. 11-year-old gabriella was standing with friends at an ice cream truck when she saw the 10 foot deep, 8 foot wide hole. after getting a closer look, she told her dad and the authorities rushed to the scene, haunted by last month's sinkhole tragedy. >> i said, oh, my gosh. it really scared me. it startled me. >>reporter: two homes were

evacuated, including this house where this man lives with his mother. >> i was a little bit scared and nervous. this is my house. >> reporter: fortunately, deadly sinkholes like the one last month are rare. our own gio benitez spoke to a geo technical engineer. >> certainly you get dozen of sinkholes a year, but to occur right in the center of a home and to certainly injury or to kill somebody, i have never heard about that happening before. >> reporter: and in this latest case, no one was hurt, but it's clear the fear lingers. a small community on shaky ground. >> thank goodness no one was hurt this time. unbelievable. let's go back to ron for the other stories making headlines. >> good morning, everyone. in the news, at least one lucky person is waking up a lot richer this morning. one winning ticket for the $338 million powerball jackpot was sold somewhere in new jersey. the winning numbers -- 17, 29, 31, 52, 53 and the powerball was 31.

we have to start out with a rocky morning in parts of south georgia and in the panhandle in florida. tornado watches are actually up. we got a targeted area for severe weather today that includes southern georgia and parts of the south carolina and north florida. look at what happened yesterday. more than 100 reports of severe weather. 75% of that is hail. that's what's covering the ground and the driveway there, with that heavy rain flooding through. on top of the severe weather, we got the northern side, chis the cold and the snow. indianapolis is right in there, with that six-plus category. the mountains of west virginia, by the time it gets over to the coast, a mix of wet snow and rain, especially for the big coastal cities. we'll be watching that tonight and tomorrow. new york city, stays in the 40s for the most part. it will be tough for anything to stick. we're below average here. a look across the nation. for now,
